Daily Disciplines of Devoted Christians
The things that make or break us
To follow Jesus Christ as a disciple requires a commitment to discipline. Abraham Lincoln's insightful words highlight that discipline involves making choices between immediate wants and enduring objectives. said that discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most. This notion underscores the significance of intentional effort and hard work. Otto von Bismarck's once said that hounds follow those who feed them. His analogy further emphasizes that our actions and habits, whether leaning towards procrastination or dedicated pursuit of goals, determine what influences and guides us. It stresses the importance of nurturing the right aspects within ourselves to shape the path we follow. So, what are your goals for 2024? What is it that you want to achieve? What does success look like to you?
In 2024, embrace the potential of challenges and triumphs, recognizing the elements beyond our control. Focus on what we can control, starting with self-discipline, which shapes our outcomes. For instance, managing verbal responses is a challenge, as noted in James 3:8, but relying on the Holy Ghost (Galatians 5:16) aids in self-control.
While maintaining constant spirituality is a goal, Ephesians 6:18 encourages consistent prayer in the Spirit. Developing patience, emphasized in Hebrews 10:36, is crucial. Daily disciplines determine success and failure levels, so prioritize prayer, Bible study, church attendance, giving, and worship.
Make reading a daily habit, committing to one book per month. Despite busy schedules, statistics reveal ample time for reading. A study by Dr. Avni Gupta at Yale University highlights the benefits of daily reading for 20 minutes, including improved cognitive abilities, increased knowledge, reduced stress, enhanced empathy, better sleep, increased creativity, and improved focus.
For a meaningful 2024 resolution, commit to daily reading. First and foremost, read your Bible every day. Be committed and consistent about spending time in the holy pages of God’s Word.
